Back in the late 60s, a friend of mine had a large laundry bin in his room, which he used to store a huge pile of comic books. Whenever I visited his home, we would spend hours reading them, and would make up our own stories featuring our favorite heroes. On weekends, I would ride my bike to the local drugstore, and check out the new arrivals from the comic rack. My allowance allowed me to purchase four 12 cent books, with money left over to buy bubblegum or Kraft carmels. Occasionally, whenever I had to take the bus, I would bring along a comic to read. My doctor at the time had a number of comic books in the waiting room. I would get to her office early, just to have time to read a few issues. If I didn't finish an issue, I'd sometimes stay after the appointment to keep reading, which caused the nurse to wonder if I needed 'help'. I was probably the only patient who didn't mind sitting in that room.
The comics that I remember the most are the DC (published by National Periodicals Publishing) issues coverdated 1966 and early 1967 with a distinctive checkerboard pattern printed along the top, and were advertised in the books as "Go-Go Checks". My original comics from those years were long ago sent to a landfill site. I started to collect comics again in the 80s, especially many of the books bearing that unforgettable top border. I stopped collecting in the 90s, but have begun picking up those issues again recently.
I've verified 459 different Go-Go Checks issues, and I've collected two thirds of them. I've got a long way to go, but look forward to the day when the run is complete.
The following links lead to pages showing the issues I've been able to acquire. None of the pictured items are for sale, unless an offer is too good to pass up.:) |
